A Letter From Wendy

Hello Bernadette,

It is primary election time here in SC. Some states have already had their primaries, other states have theirs later. The challenge is to learn about the candidates that are running.

Used to be, when we had 3 networks, you saw ads about the candidates, you might even watch debates between candidates for Governor or US Senator. I remember pages of the Miami Herald dedicated to profiles of the candidates, so you could learn more about their positions and decide who you wanted to vote for.

If you are like me, I almost never watch network TV, only streaming channels. So I rarely see commercials for candidates, which is fine with me. The commercials I have seen are mostly negative about an opponent rather than telling you what that candidate might do to represent you.

So, how do you educate yourself before you vote? That is a really important question, and it has become more difficult. A participative democracy requires an educated public.

Here is a place to start.

Vote411.org is a helpful resource. From this site you can verify that you are in fact, registered to vote, find your polling place, see what’s on your ballot, and more. I particularly like this site.

Please vote. It is your right and privilege as a citizen of our country. But be an educated voter. Our opportunity to vote comes around every 2 years (unless there is a special election or local election). It is worth it to take the time to learn about your candidates and any ballot initiatives.
