A Quilt, A Memory, A Gift: How One Man’s Thoughtful Gesture Became a Gift for Many
As a small, all-volunteer nonprofit, Prime Time for Women, Inc. (PTFW) thrives thanks to the generosity of our members and supporters. Contributions come in many forms—some give financially, others volunteer their time, and many share their unique talents to help our organization flourish.
Recently, we received a truly special donation from Skip Horner, a dedicated member of PTFW’s Walking to Wellness program. Skip gifted us a stunning, hand-crafted quilt created by local fabric artist Clay L. Anderson.
Anderson, who grew up on a farm in Bedford County, PA, spent much of his career as a machinist at JLG in McConnellsburg. After retiring early due to health issues, he turned his attention to creative passions…restoring classic sports cars and quilting among them.
Knowing Clay’s exceptional quilting skills, Skip commissioned a quilt as a gift for a friend who adored lizards. Clay embraced the challenge and designed a vibrant 70” x 70” quilt titled “Chameleons of the World.” The quilt features 13 squares arranged in a dynamic pattern: three rows of tertiary-colored chameleons (red-orange, yellow-orange, red-violet, blue-violet, blue-green, and yellow-green), interspersed with rows of equally colorful foliage. Alternating square of this playful quilt is bordered in lime green and black, creating a visually striking and intricate design.
In juxtaposition to the front, the back depicts old world maps in neutral tones, offering a sense of tranquility, sophistication and modern simplicity. Interestingly, the neutral shades of the back, when placed alongside the pure colors of the front, actually make them appear brighter due to the contrast.
Completed in 2022, the quilt was lovingly stored in a protective cover after Skip’s friend sadly passed away before receiving it. Recently, fellow Walking to Wellness member Ray Mihm suggested that Skip donate the quilt to support PTFW’s mission. Inspired by the idea, Skip generously agreed.
Now, this beautiful quilt—once a heartfelt gift for a friend—will become a source of joy and support for our entire community. We’ll be raffling it off to raise funds for Prime Time for Women, and we know it will bring happiness to its new owner while helping us continue our work.
Skip’s thoughtful gesture has come full circle, transforming into a lasting gift for many. Thank you, Skip, for your kindness and generosity!
