Me vs. Me

I spent most of today listening to two Monicas argue.

One Monica was tired. She wanted to lie down, leave the kitchen alone and let the day be what it was.

The other Monica kept inventory.

Look at those dishes. Look at what you haven’t done. You’ve wasted the afternoon. You should get up. You should be more disciplined. What is wrong with you?

Here is the ridiculous part: I live alone.

Nobody was coming home to inspect my kitchen. Nobody was going to ask what I accomplished. Nobody but me cared whether those dishes stayed in the sink another day.

Still, the argument continued until I had managed to turn being tired into evidence against myself.

Finally, I stopped fighting and took a long nap.

When I woke up, the dishes were still there, the world had not ended, and I realized the voice berating me was not telling the truth. It was old conditioning wearing my voice, sneaking back into the room because I was too tired to recognize it.

A kitchen full of dirty dishes means I have eaten several times. That is all the evidence it contains. There is no evidence of my worth in a sink full of dirty dishes.

Perhaps retirement is not only freedom from a job. Perhaps it is finally noticing all the old bosses who moved into our heads and never bothered to retire.

Who is still giving orders inside your head, long after you stopped living for them?
