Prime Time for Women: We May Be Leading the Way

All of Prime Time for Women’s wise and wonderful members know that our organization is committed to fostering healthy aging through research-based programs that promote positive social connections, lifelong learning and healthy lifestyles.  You wouldn’t be members if you didn’t believe this to be true!

We are women in our “PRIME” and want to live our BEST lives now! While it’s important to approach this phase of life with optimism, hope and positivity, it doesn’t mean we can deny reality. According to Stanford University, “In a world where both age and gender can shape economic opportunities, gendered ageism presents unique, often overlooked challenges to financial security—especially for women.”

Additionally, recent research reveals the role ageism plays in seniors receiving less than equitable healthcare. Did you know that the United States has been described as the “most age-segregated society ever”?  In an article by Victoria Pelham she notes, “Age-based prejudice leads to serious inequalities, including missed or delayed diagnoses and less information about medical decisions and treatment side effects.”

Fortunately, numerous studies validate Prime Time for Women’s emphasis on the health benefits of positive social connections and lifelong learning. In their book,  The Longevity Project: Surprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark EIGHT-DECADE STUDY , Howard S. Friedman, Ph.D. and Leslie R. Martin, Ph.D. write, “We have been told that the key to longevity involves obsessing over what we eat, how much we stress, and how fast we run. Based on the most extensive study of longevity ever conducted, ‘The Longevity Project’ exposes what really impacts our lifespan–including friends, family, personality, and work.” We, as PTFW members, are on the right path!!!

This January 22-23, The Longevity Project, in partnership with Stanford University, will host Century Summit V, an in-person and virtual conference highlighting the rewards and challenges of longevity.  Stanford University will host a session titled, “Gendered Ageism and the Challenges of Financial Security.” This session will feature experts and thought leaders in finance and economic policy research as they specifically address how women face greater financial insecurities as they age.  According to the website, “Women in their 60s have, on average, only 70% of the retirement savings that men have.”

If you attend the conference either virtually or in-person, please send an email via the Prime Time for Women website’s contact page if you’d like to be invited to a post-conference discussion. We would love to hear your thoughts and ideas…after all every woman deserves to be seen and heard!
